APRIL International vs Bupa Global.
APRIL International builds its MyHealth International plan on a hospital core with basic repatriation assistance, and you add outpatient, maternity, dental or optical cover as options. Bupa Global sells international health insurance as five set packages, from Major Medical to Ultimate. Both include evacuation in the ranges compared here, so compare the routine care each quote holds.
In brief
Which is better, APRIL International or Bupa Global?
Neither is better for everyone. It depends on what you need the policy to do.
- APRIL International suits you if you want a hospital core with repatriation assistance and would rather add each option yourself: outpatient, maternity, dental or optical cover. Check the outpatient cap on Explore and any co-payment you choose.
- Bupa Global suits you if you’d rather choose one of five set packages and a deductible. Routine care varies a lot between them: Major Medical doesn’t give the routine cover of the broader plans.
- Neither, for now, if your current policy already accepts your medical history. Each insurer underwrites your history separately, so get the new terms in writing before you cancel anything.
These are editorial selection pointers, not a personal recommendation or a quote. Your residence, medical history and written acceptance terms can change the shortlist.
APRIL International vs Bupa Global: the key differences.
What we compared: MyHealth International: Explore through Elite, and Global Health Plans: Major Medical through Ultimate.
| Feature | APRIL International · sources | Bupa Global · sources |
|---|---|---|
| Plan structure | Four plan levels. Hospitalisation with basic repatriation assistance is the core; outpatient, maternity, dental, optical and comprehensive assistance are options. | Five packages with different benefit breadth and deductible options. |
| Outpatient care | Optional on every level. Explore caps it at €/US$3,000 a year; the higher levels have no overall outpatient cap but keep per-benefit limits. A 10–30% co-payment applies to outpatient only, if chosen. | Day-to-day benefits vary substantially by tier; Major Medical does not provide the same routine cover as the broader plans. |
| Medical evacuation | Basic repatriation assistance is included and insured by Chubb. It needs the assistance provider’s prior approval, and its medical team decides the destination, timing and means of transport. | Listed across the five tiers; benefits remain subject to the membership guide and assistance arrangements. |
| Medical underwriting | A health questionnaire signed within three months of the start date; the insurer accepts, sets specific terms or declines. Pre-existing conditions are excluded unless declared and accepted. No moratorium route is described in the documents reviewed. | Cover for certain pre-existing conditions is subject to underwriting. The brochure does not establish that your condition will be accepted. |
| Treatment countries | The 2026–2027 terms cover your declared country of residence and a zone: worldwide including or excluding the US. The product page speaks of choosing countries à la carte instead, so check the written terms. Outside the zone, emergencies are covered for up to 60 consecutive days within tier limits. You must live outside your country of nationality. | Area choices vary by tier. Confirm the issuing entity, residence eligibility and any US or Europe restriction. |
| Renewal and continuity | Twelve-month membership renewed automatically unless either party terminates at the anniversary. Premiums can change with age, residence, medical inflation and the insured group’s claims. The product page says “for as long as you want”, but the terms do not establish a lifetime guarantee; check the written terms. | The brochure lists automatic renewal and no cancellation based on claims history. Read the membership guide for contractual conditions and changes at renewal. |
Ask for the membership guide, table of benefits and acceptance terms of the policy actually offered to you: general summaries don’t replace those documents.
What the differences mean for you.
Options on a hospital core, or a set package
APRIL’s four levels share a hospital core with basic repatriation assistance; outpatient, maternity, dental and optical cover are options you add. Bupa’s five packages each come with their own breadth of benefits and a choice of deductible. So compare the finished policies: the APRIL level with every option you’d choose, next to the Bupa package you’d buy.
Routine care: an option at APRIL, a level at Bupa
At APRIL, outpatient cover is optional on every level. Explore caps it at €/US$3,000 a year; the higher levels have no overall cap but keep limits per benefit, and you can choose a 10–30% co-payment on outpatient care. At Bupa, day-to-day benefits vary a lot between packages, and Major Medical doesn’t give the routine cover of the broader plans. List the doctor visits and prescriptions you expect, then compare those limits.
Both include evacuation, so read who decides
APRIL’s basic repatriation assistance needs the assistance provider’s prior approval, and its medical team decides where you go, when and how. Bupa lists evacuation on all five packages, subject to the membership guide and its assistance arrangements. Having it doesn’t decide between them: read when it applies and who chooses the hospital before you treat it as a flight home.
Check the cover area, then the renewal terms
APRIL’s 2026–2027 terms cover your country of residence and a zone, worldwide with or without the US, and you must live outside your country of nationality. Its product page speaks of choosing countries à la carte, so check the written terms. Bupa’s area choices vary by package. At renewal, Bupa’s brochure lists automatic renewal and no cancellation because of your claims history; APRIL’s terms renew the membership each year unless either side ends it at the anniversary, without listing the grounds.

APRIL International reviewBupa Global
