APRIL International vs Cigna Global.
APRIL International and Cigna Global both build international health insurance from a core you add to, with outpatient care as a separate choice. The clearest difference is evacuation: APRIL includes basic repatriation assistance in its core, while at Cigna it is an optional module. Both decide on your medical history from what you disclose.
In brief
Which is better, APRIL International or Cigna Global?
Neither is better for everyone. It depends on what you need the policy to do.
- APRIL International suits you if you want repatriation assistance in the core of the plan, then add outpatient and other cover as options. Its assistance provider approves an evacuation and decides where you go.
- Cigna Global suits you if you’d rather build the plan module by module, adding evacuation only if you need it. Check that the final quote lists every module you compared.
- Neither, for now, if your current policy already accepts your medical history. Both underwrite from what you disclose, so have the new terms in writing before you cancel anything.
These are editorial selection pointers, not a personal recommendation or a quote. Your residence, medical history and written acceptance terms can change the shortlist.
APRIL International vs Cigna Global: the key differences.
What we compared: MyHealth International: Explore through Elite, and Global Health Options: Silver, Gold and Platinum.
| Feature | APRIL International · sources | Cigna Global · sources |
|---|---|---|
| Plan structure | Four plan levels. Hospitalisation with basic repatriation assistance is the core; outpatient, maternity, dental, optical and comprehensive assistance are options. | A core medical plan with optional benefit modules. |
| Outpatient care | Optional on every level. Explore caps it at €/US$3,000 a year; the higher levels have no overall outpatient cap but keep per-benefit limits. A 10–30% co-payment applies to outpatient only, if chosen. | Additional International Outpatient module. Some named core benefits already include outpatient treatment; read both sections. |
| Medical evacuation | Basic repatriation assistance is included and insured by Chubb. It needs the assistance provider’s prior approval, and its medical team decides the destination, timing and means of transport. | Optional International Medical Evacuation module, subject to medical assistance approval and terms. |
| Medical underwriting | A health questionnaire signed within three months of the start date; the insurer accepts, sets specific terms or declines. Pre-existing conditions are excluded unless declared and accepted. No moratorium route is described in the documents reviewed. | The individual documents use medical disclosure and any agreed exclusions. Do not import the underwriting options of a Cigna employer scheme. |
| Treatment countries | The 2026–2027 terms cover your declared country of residence and a zone: worldwide including or excluding the US. The product page speaks of choosing countries à la carte instead, so check the written terms. Outside the zone, emergencies are covered for up to 60 consecutive days within tier limits. You must live outside your country of nationality. | Select the treatment area and check residence eligibility. Emergency cover outside that area is a separate, limited benefit. |
| Renewal and continuity | Twelve-month membership renewed automatically unless either party terminates at the anniversary. Premiums can change with age, residence, medical inflation and the insured group’s claims. The product page says “for as long as you want”, but the terms do not establish a lifetime guarantee; check the written terms. | The CGIC February 2024 example protects against claims-based non-renewal, subject to clause 7, while renewal is offered on stated terms. Check the rules for your issuer. |
Ask for the membership guide, table of benefits and acceptance terms of the policy actually offered to you: general summaries don’t replace those documents.
What the differences mean for you.
Both add outpatient care as a choice
At APRIL, outpatient cover is optional on every level: Explore caps it at €/US$3,000 a year, and the higher levels have no overall cap but keep limits per benefit. Cigna adds it through its International Outpatient module, and some named core benefits already include outpatient treatment, so read both sections. Compare the outpatient cover you’d actually buy, and any co-payment, with the care you expect to use.
Evacuation: in APRIL’s core, a module at Cigna
APRIL includes basic repatriation assistance, insured by Chubb; it needs the assistance provider’s prior approval, and its medical team decides the destination, timing and transport. At Cigna, international medical evacuation is an optional module, subject to approval by its medical assistance service. If you might need treatment in another country, check that the Cigna quote includes the module, then read the conditions on both.
Your medical history needs a written answer
APRIL asks for a health questionnaire signed within three months of the start date, then accepts, sets specific terms or declines; a pre-existing condition is excluded unless declared and accepted, and its documents describe no moratorium route. Cigna’s individual documents use medical disclosure and any exclusions agreed with you; don’t assume the underwriting options of a Cigna employer scheme. With either, the acceptance letter is the answer.
Check the cover area, then the renewal rules
APRIL’s 2026–2027 terms cover your country of residence and a zone, worldwide with or without the US, with emergencies outside it for up to 60 days in a row; its product page speaks of choosing countries à la carte, so check the written terms. With Cigna, choose the treatment area and check that the plan can be issued where you live. APRIL’s terms let either side end the membership at the anniversary, without listing the grounds; the Guernsey Cigna rules cited here are an example for that issuer only. Ask both for current terms.

This page compares APRIL International’s MyHealth International, Explore through Elite, as described in its 2026–2027 Terms and Conditions (reference NMHI26) and June 2026 product information document, with Cigna Global Health Options individual cover in the February 2026 UK customer guide. The separate CGIC February 2024 Guernsey rules are a labelled renewal example, not universal Cigna terms. APRIL’s short-term, student and travel plans, Cigna group and Close Care plans, employer schemes and local-market policies are outside it. APRIL’s product page and its terms describe the cover area differently; this page follows the terms.
